The Foundation of Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park

3. Aims:
To conduct activities for the enhancement of the prefect Ural people's understanding of ceramic art and to form a place that facilitates exchanges beneficial to people around the world on the theme of ceramics, and also to contribute to the prosperity of the ceramic industry of Shiga Prefecture and its cultural improvement.

4. Activities:
(1) Activities entrusted by Shiga Prefecture and the Town of Shigaraki.

a. Collection and storage of works of ceramic art and documents and materials
      concerning ceramics.
b. Exhibition of works of ceramic art and documents and materials
      concerning ceramics.
c. Training with respect to creation of ceramic works.
d. Exhibition and introduction of industrial Shigaraki ceramic ware.
e. Maintenance of facilities.


(2)Surveys and research on ceramic culture and its distribution.

(3)Other activities necessary for the accomplishment of the Foundation's aims.

The Park and Development

1. Prospectus
The Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park was built as a part of the people's recreation land project. The SCCP is intended to support various activities around the theme of ceramics, including artistic creation, training, and exhibitions. The aims of the SCCP also include the promotion of local industry and the development of culture through human, materials, and informational exchanges, interfacing with the world. The Park was completed and opened in June 1990. The SCCP is administered by the Foundation of Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park.

2. Chronology of Park Development

April 1985
Preliminary planning for the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park started in the Economic Affairs Group of the Commerce and Industry Section of the Prefectural Commerce, Industry, and Labor Department.

March 1986
Promulgation of an ordinance appropriating one billion yen to fund the planning of the park.

December 1986
Estabilshment of the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park Research Committee (eleven members).

August 1987
Research Committee report completed.

December 1987
Design contest announced (winner selected in May 1988).

March 1988
Acquisition of the park site (23 hectares).

April 1988
A ten-member staff was formed in the Commerce and Industry Section to prepare for the opening of the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park.

May 1988
Town of Shigaraki donated 17 hectares of the site to Shiga Prefecture.

November 1988
Site development started.

December 1988
Building design completed.

March 1989
Building work started.

July 1989
Landscaping started.

April 1990
The Foundation of Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park established.

June 1990
Construction completed and Park opened. Ceramic World Shigaraki'91 Preview held from June 2 to June 6.

November 1990
Park temporarily closed.

March 1991
Selection of symbol mark and logotype created by Ikko Tanaka for the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park.

April 1991
Ceramic World Shigaraki '91 opened on April 20.

May 1991
The festival closed on May 15.

July 1991
Park began normal operations on July 20.

July 1992
Started an Artist in Residency Program at the Institute of Ceramic Studies.

October 1995
Organized a symposium "Contemporary vessel concept in Ceramics" for 5th anniversary of the opening of SCCP.

October 2001
Organized an event for the 10th anniversary of the opening.

October 2004
Started a new program for the children.

April 2006
The Foundation of the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park became a Designated Administrator.

June 2006
Organized a special exhibition "Exhibition of the works made at the Artist in Residency Program" for the 15th Anniversary of the SCCP.

October 2011
Organized a special exhibition of "Ueda Naokata and Takahashi Syunsai" for the 20th anniversary of the SCCP.
